Predicting the optimum population of AustraliaContextual informationThis sample of accomplished geography teaching is taken from the same lesson as shown in sample 6a. As part of their year 12 course, the students have been studying Population Geography ‘mostly on a global scale’. In this lesson, the accomplished teacher was attempting to get them to ‘think about the facts and make them think and predict … get them to try and predict perhaps what they think Australia’s optimum population should be.’ As one student commented after the lesson, in this lesson segment, ‘we ourselves had to estimate the optimum population of Australia’.
