Sample 7 | Print |

Topographic mapping skills

Contextual information

This sample of accomplished geography teaching is from the same teacher as sample 6. Teaching in a medium sized non-government girls’ school in metropolitan Adelaide, the teacher is revisiting topographic mapping skills. He had decided to concentrate ‘on some of the skills that the students are developing, specifically topographic map skills’. He wanted to help the students revise their understandings, and extend their knowledge, by introducing some new skills. This lesson concentrated on scale, bearings and the introduction of sketch maps developed from the topographic maps. The teacher intended that this lesson would ultimately assist the students to prepare for the final exam. This sample features work around distance and scale on a topographic map.
